Abstract:
Nielsen fixed point theory, in general, uses topological invariants to try to answer the question: How can the fixed point set of a map change under homotopies? The main concept is the Nielsen Number N(f), which is a lower bound for the number of fixed points of any map homotopic to f.
Since its beginnings in the 1920s, Nielsen theory has been adapted to address many closely related areas. We will discuss the basics of 8 different Nielsen-type theories which have developed in the past century. Technical details will be skipped, and there will be many pictures.
