Abstract:
Research software increasingly involves developing interfaces with different softwares and libraries during development and design. Modern scientific software stack frequently involves offloading high-performant tasks to low-level programming languages interfaced with higher level languages for readability and usability. Under these circumstances, reproducibility and code maintenance for a research group faces a huge challenge. Containers can aid in streamlining software sharing and portability with little to no performance penalties. We discuss the basics and principles of building and using containers in regular software development with important use cases. Differences between popular container management tools like Docker and Apptainer (previously, Singularity) will be highlighted. Practical examples of building and using containers are provided in the context of research software using Apptainer.
